The Give Hope Group was founded by a group of residents of Ongata Rongai in 2001 and registered by the Ministry of Culture and Social Services the same year. Our members comprise adults and parents of children with disabilities in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, Kenya.
Ongata Rongai is located to the immediate south-west of Nairobi. Historically, the area was occupied by the Maasai, but now days, it is a harmonious melting pot of people of different ethnic and social backgrounds. We are not a city so there is no zoning and the wealthy, the middle class and the poor live in close proximity.
The Give Hope Group concentrates its efforts where the poorest people live, a place known as "Kware", Swahili spelling for “Quarry”. Previously, quarrying was done there on tract of public land. Once the stones had been extracted, the quarry workers constructed houses out of the rubble and mud which they occupied and rented out to other poor people
Thus the slum of Kware grew up. Today, people of all social class reside side by side in Kware as the slum is gradually being upgraded by its residents who were given possession of their plots by the Goverment.
